“Let’s Cook Together”, a community kitchen for residents in the Teesdale neighourbood, experienced a delicious and successful culinary experience this spring. 10 participants from various countries including Guyana, China, Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Hungary, St. Lucia and Canada cooked healthy and nutritious foods while learning cooking skills, budgeting and team work. Each participant was able to lead one of the classes by preparing the food that that participant had chosen for the class. This helped develop leadership skills because each participant was able to teach the class about their food item, and talk about their native culture in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Participants decided on the recipes and picked up the ingredients and were able to take the delicious leftovers home after eating together as a group in the dining area at Teesdale. Smoothies, fruit and vegetable salads were added to create a well balanced diet. And, the scent of the food drew some guests into the centre. They came in and sampled some of the food, too! The participants also learned new techniques and the art of cooking. For example, the Barbadian dish of “coo/coo” where participants had to learn to tame the corn meal.
Most can’t wait to have this class again. 3 of the participants are interested in getting their Food Handlers certificate and are also interested in joining Vesta Catering – our growing social enterprise here at Warden Woods.
